Also lots of oil in the threads, is that bad?

Are they all like that or is it just that one?

Is that from a 2 stroke?

If that’s from a car, get an exorcism.

Looks like it’s running rich and/or has some oil blow by.

Nope.

Only one plug in this engine.

Its from a side by side. Not sure that matters.

Not bothered by the oil on the threads, but that thing is not running well. Lawn equipment?

Could be running rich (I might clean the intake filter).

It wasn’t running at all. Its from a side by side that we use to haul stuff around the farm.

That’s umm, that’s....not good.

It looks like it’s either major blowby (if it has PCV routed back to intake - usually bad rings) or possible valve stem seal failure. Either way that’s gross. Have you checked compression?

I might be with you on that one.

I have no idea if it (yamaha Rhino) has PCV, but there are 3 breather tubes coming out of the crankcase/transmission, so I am guessing no.
I am going to put a new plug in it and see what happens, don’t have a compression tester and probably won’t bother to get one.

One of the last times I saw a plug like that was from a ‘74 Snapper lawn mower’s 8HP Briggs, which was so clapped out I had to add a cup of oil every time I mowed. Your rings are very likely shot beyond all reason - or you have PCV issues.

Piston rings are overrated.

I don’t even know if this has PCV
![]() 08/22/2016 at 11:36 |

Is that really the only explanation?
![]() 08/22/2016 at 11:42 |

I’d be very surprised if it does not have PCV. Just gotta look around for a hose routing from the airbox or inlet tube back to the block

I will check, its got 3 breathers coming off the crank case/transmission that are just open.

It just seems like a lot of buildup.
Anything drastic done to the carb? I think the fastest way to find out what’s going on would be a compression test. That will tell you if it’s rings, or valve, or a really bad fuel mixture. If you’re just looking at compression, and not leak down, you can get the tool for about $30.
Also, any change someone put premix in it? That could add a lot of build up fast, and ruin the plug.

If it's just black and the tip wasn't wet, then it's running rich. Where the oil is coming from depends on if the motor smokes and how it smokes.

Haven’t touched the carb. I would guess this plug might just be old and the motor doesn’t get up to temp as much as it should when we use it.
But there is a chance that someone put premixed in it.
If this doesn;t fix it and if it isn’t premix then I will try compression.

A compression test will do nothing to narrow down why it’s burning oil
